CIEE: Social Sciences in Amsterdam

Program Overview

The Social Sciences program at the University of Amsterdam was established in 1993. The CIEE study center is based at the International School for Humanities and Social Sciences (ISHSS)/Graduate School for Social Sciences (GSSS) which offers a number of humanities and social sciences courses in English, and aims to increase students' understanding of social, political, and cultural realities in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and Europe. You can also take regular UvA courses in English if you meet the prerequisites.

You will typically take four courses chosen from the ISHSS, UvA, and CIEE Dutch language and content course offerings. While Dutch is not required, it is strongly recommended, particularly if you are planning on staying for the academic year.

Students who have had previous Dutch study can take Dutch classes at the Dutch Language Institute (INTT). If you are fluent in Dutch, French, German, Italian, or Spanish you may elect to take a UvA course taught in one of those languages for credit. Second semester students, or students with prior Dutch study who have completed the CIEE beginning Dutch course, may continue with the INTT Dutch courses.

Application Process

If you are interested in applying to a CIEE program, we strongly advise you to meet with an advisor prior to applying.

IMPORTANT: Application for a CIEE program involves two parts:

1.    Completion of the GEO application process.

2.    Completion of the CIEE application process.

Please note that the GEO deadline supersedes the CIEE deadline. An application fee is due at the time of application and is non-refundable under any circumstances.
