SIT: Public Health in Urban Environments in Buenos Aires

Program Overview

SIT semester programs include the following components: one-week orientation, intensive language study, homestay (in urban and rural areas), thematic seminar, field methods seminar, independent study project (last month of program), and program evaluation.

This program offers an academic, culturally-immersive exploration of how living in urban areas can shape health conditions, from the particular vantage point of Argentina’s capital city. Today, Argentina continues to face traditional health risks—including those linked to unsafe water, inadequate nutrition, and poor sanitation—while grappling with escalating rates of chronic disease.

The Public Health in Urban Environments program looks at Argentina’s epidemiological profile and health system from a comparative perspective. The healthcare system in Argentina shares similar challenges with the US system in that Argentina has an analogous epidemiological profile, is impacted by comparable migration processes, and struggles with unequal access to good care. Argentina’s public health system provides free healthcare as a result of the country’s well-developed social security system, which is composed of private healthcare providers and public services.

Application Process

If you are interested in applying to the Public Health in Urban Environments program, we strongly advise you to meet with an advisor prior to applying.

SIT Study Abroad has rolling admission, which means that applications are reviewed on a rolling basis between the opening and closing dates of the review process. Applications must be complete to be reviewed for admission. Since many programs fill long before the published closing dates, you are strongly advised to apply by the above priority deadline.

Qualified applicants are recommended by a GEO Study Abroad Program Advisor. The final selection of participants is made by SIT. The SIT admissions committee strives to select students who will be the best possible match for the program. You should submit strong academic references and demonstrate a consistent academic record, clear motivation to study abroad, solid reasoning for their program choice, and an understanding of the program model.

IMPORTANT: Application for a SIT program involves two parts. Both parts of the application are due by the GEO application deadline.

  1. Completion of the GEO application process.
  2. Completion of the SIT application process.

Please note that the GEO deadline supersedes the SIT deadline. An application fee is due at the time of application and is non-refundable under any circumstances.

Additional Requirements

  • 1.5 years of recent college-level Spanish or the equivalent and the ability to follow coursework in Spanish, as assessed by SIT.
  • Previous college-level coursework and/or other significant preparation in health sciences, political science, anthropology, sociology, or development studies, as assessed by SIT.

Priority Discounts

If your program has a Priority Deadline, complete all pre-decision application materials by this date to receive a $100 credit toward your program fee. Please note, students participating in multiple summer programs are only eligible to receive the $100 credit once.
