In the CIEE Cape Town program you will witness and take part in the complex process of the transformation occurring in South Africa. During courses, community engagement activities, excursions, and more, you’ll trace the impact of colonialism on the indigenous peoples, examine the emergence and significance of apartheid, and explore the role this fascinating country’s history continues to have on society today. If you’ve ever heard Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the Grammy award winning male a cappella group from South Africa, you may have an idea of what’s in store: a transformative experience with a people whose beauty and power in the face of struggle will give you the chills.
In this program you will live with a South African family or University of Cape Town students, begin your study of the Afrikaans language, play traditional instruments like the gourd bow and maskanda guitar, and dance the isicathulo and other culturally important dances. You will also have the chance to experience one of the most multicultural cities in the world.
