CIEE: Arts and Sciences in Stellenbosch

Program Overview

The Arts and Sciences study abroad program in Stellenbosch provides a broad selection of classes in community development, business, sociology, politics, literature, ecology and economics. It combines classroom studies with field-based experiential learning in the community engagement. 

You will also choose to enroll in multiple academic courses at Stellenbosch University with a specific focus on language, development and policy, ecology and environment, and/or community engagement. You may choose to do a CIEE Directed Independent Research project in place of one Stellenbosch University elective course.

Application Process

If you are interested in applying to a CIEE program, we strongly advise you to meet with an advisor prior to applying.

Selection for the program is based on a review of the your written application, recommendation, transcript(s), and completion of the interview process. Qualified applicants are recommended by a GEO Study Abroad Program Advisor. The final selection of participants is made by CIEE.

IMPORTANT: Application for a CIEE program involves two parts:

  1. Completion of the GEO application process.
  2. Completion of the CIEE application process.

Please note that the GEO deadline supersedes the CIEE deadline. An application fee is due at the time of application and is non-refundable under any circumstances.

Additional Requirements

  • College-level coursework in geography, ecology, environmental studies, sustainability, community development, or other related disciplines is strongly recommended

Priority Discounts

If your program has a Priority Deadline, complete all pre-decision application materials by this date to receive a $100 credit toward your program fee. Please note, students participating in multiple summer programs are only eligible to receive the $100 credit once.

Note: this $100 discount does not apply to priority deadlines for SIT programs.

Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.
