Intensive Arabic in Amman

Program Overview

This 9-week summer program is for students who have a strong interest in learning Modern Standard Arabic through an intensive language program. You will attend Arabic classes on a daily basis at the Qasid Arabic Institute in Amman. Students of all levels of Arabic, from novice to advanced, can be accommodated and no prior experience in Arabic language is required. In addition to daily classes, you will attend a lecture series organized by the faculty director and participate in excursions to sites of natural, cultural and historical significance in Jordan.

Academic Details

You will attend language courses at the Qasid Arabic Institute 4 hours per day, 5 days a week during the 9-week program.  The summer course is equivalent to an entire year of of university Arabic (165 contact hours or 16 quarter credits) at the first, second, third or fourth year level. Qasid utilizes the al-Kitaab series as the base text for all courses in addition to emphasizing class participation and the development of conversational skills.

In addition to the study of Arabic, you will have the opportunity to participate in a lecture series with professionals who use Arabic language skills and cultural knowledge in their work in the fields of human rights, journalism, foreign service and law.

Faculty and Staff

David Hollenberg is an Associate Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Oregon. He has extensive experience living and conducting research in the MENA region and has led Arabic Intensive study abroad programs in Amman, Jordan and Yemen. His research interests include medieval Ismailism, modern Yemeni Zaydi scholasticism, and manuscript culture.

Housing Description

You will reside in Qasid-managed apartments located within a 15 minute walk of the Institue in the residential neighborhood of Al-Madina Al-Riyadiya (Sport City). Most apartments are clustered close to other Qasid housing units, helping to create a sense of community with other students of Arabic. Each building has an Arabic-speaking staff member on site who attends to building maintenance and security. The apartments are conveniently located near a supermarket, the Mukhtar Mall, several restaurants, and a gym. Easy access to public transport facilitates your movement throughout Amman.

If your program has a Priority Deadline, complete all pre-decision application materials by this date to receive a $100 credit toward your program fee. Please note, students participating in multiple summer programs are only eligible to receive the $100 credit once.

Note: this $100 discount does not apply to priority deadlines for SIT programs.
