CIEE: Business, Language, and Culture in Shanghai

Program Overview

The Business, Language, and Culture program is designed to provide you with a deeper understanding of China as it emerges to take a leading role in the global market. You will be introduced to the Chinese language, the history of China's economic reforms, China's macroeconomic impact on other economies, and the local business practices that shape and mold the economic development of the nation. Language classes and related language clinics and tutoring sessions are taught in Mandarin Chinese, with business and area studies courses taught in English.

Application Process

If you are interested in applying to a CIEE program, we strongly advise you to meet with an advisor prior to applying.

Selection for the program is based on a review of the your written application, recommendation, transcript(s), and completion of the interview process. Qualified applicants are recommended by a GEO Study Abroad Program Advisor. The final selection of participants is made by CIEE.

IMPORTANT: Application for a CIEE program involves two parts:

  1. Completion of the GEO application process.
  2. Completion of the CIEE application process.

Please note that the GEO deadline supersedes the CIEE deadline. An application fee is due at the time of application and is non-refundable under any circumstances.

Additional Requirements

  • Five terms of college-level microeconomics or macroeconomics, accounting, finance, managment, or marketing
  • East China Normal University and Dongghua will not accept students who are citizens of the People's Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan, ROC, Hong Kong SAR, or Macau. This includes those who are U.S. permanent residents. Students must provide a copy of a non-Taiwan/non-Chinese passport.​

Priority Discounts

If your program has a Priority Deadline, complete all pre-decision application materials by this date to receive a $100 credit toward your program fee. Please note, students participating in multiple summer programs are only eligible to receive the $100 credit once.

Note: this $100 discount does not apply to priority deadlines for SIT programs.

Course Equivalencies

Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.
