The Vancouver architecture and urban design program provides undergraduate and graduate architecture students the opportunity to participate in an integrated, design-based program in this world-class cosmopolitan city. Granville Island, one of the “world’s great public spaces,” will serve as the site for both the urban and architecture design projects, and is the location of the academic and studio facilities.

The Vancouver architecture and urban design program is an integrated, design-based program open to undergraduate and graduate students in architecture and interior architecture who are eligible for their UO 4/584 studio sequences.
You are required to follow an integrated academic program of four courses, consisting of an urban design and programming seminar, an advanced architectural design studio, a design seminar on kinetic architecture, and a companion course in media for design development. The three principal courses all involve interrelated design projects, and you will therefore be engaged in environmental design at diverse levels of scale, including an island-scale urban design problem, comprehensive building design, and the design of kinetic building systems and details.
After 30 years of successful operation, Granville Island is engaged in a comprehensive planning and redevelopment effort, focusing on the urban fabric of the island, sustainability, and transportation. Several professional studies have been completed to date, and our work on a specific urban design problem and on building programming and design for a real site will address real issues and will contribute to the on-going redevelopment process.
You will live in shared extended-stay apartments in the Sandman Suites facility on Davie Street in Vancouver's West End. The location is an excellent and very central one, with easy access to the downtown core, Granville Island (by bicycle or ferry), English Bay beach, and other desirable locations. The Sandman Suites is a smoke-free building. Amenities include: full kitchen facilities with full-size refrigerator, stove, microwave and dishwasher; in-suite washer / dryer units; fitness facilities; pHresh Spa + Wellness Club; seasonal/heated outdoor pool; and cleaning service twice each week.
