Program Overview

At the CIEE Study Center in Gaborone, you will have the opportunity to become a fully integrated member of the University of Botswana campus community. In addition to developing your Setswana language skills, you will benefit from unique academic courses in various disciplines that focus on Botswana, specifically, and Southern Africa. Through CIEE-coordinated volunteer opportunities and excursions, you will take important steps towards becoming members of the local community. Through specialized courses and integrated extracurricular activities, you will gain a greater understanding of contemporary Botswana culture, and its role in Southern Africa.

You may choose from courses in any faculties and departments for which you have the necessary prerequisites.

You will enroll in a Setswana language course, the CIEE Language and Culture Practicum, and four regular university courses, one of which must have a focus on Botswana or Southern Africa.

Course Equivalencies

Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.

Application process

If you are interested in applying to a CIEE program, we strongly advise you to meet with an advisor prior to applying.

Selection for the program is based on a review of the your written application, recommendation, transcript(s), and completion of the interview process. Qualified applicants are recommended by a GEO Study Abroad Program Advisor. The final selection of participants is made by CIEE.

IMPORTANT: Application for a CIEE program involves two parts:

  1. Completion of the GEO application process.
  2. Completion of the CIEE application process.

Please note that the GEO deadline supersedes the CIEE deadline. An application fee is due at the time of application and is non-refundable under any circumstances.
