Program Overview

The Advanced Chinese Studies program offers support for superior Chinese language students interested in taking content classes completely in Chinese with Chinese undergraduate students. You will be required to pass a placement exam taken upon arrival in Beijing. You will enroll in one of the schools or departments at Peking University, that may include: the School of Mathematical Sciences; the the Department of Chinese Language and Literature; the School of Physics; Department of History; the School of International Studies; or the Guanghua School of Management

You must enroll in three Peking University courses each semester in addition to the CIEE course. If you complete the academic year program, you will not repeat the CIEE course in your second semester.
CIEE Language Commitment Students take part in the CIEE Community Language Commitment by speaking Chinese at all times (except in emergencies). This fosters a learning community that contributes to both Chinese language proficiency and understanding of Chinese society.

Additional requirements

  • Peking University will not accept students who are citizens of the People's Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan, ROC, Hong Kong SAR, or Macau. This includes those who are U.S. permanent residents. Students must provide a copy of a non-Taiwan/non-Chinese passport.

Course Equivalencies

Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.

Application process

If you are interested in applying to a CIEE program, we strongly advise you to meet with an advisor prior to applying.

Selection for the program is based on a review of the your written application, recommendation, transcript(s), and completion of the interview process. Qualified applicants are recommended by a GEO Study Abroad Program Advisor. The final selection of participants is made by CIEE.

IMPORTANT: Application for a CIEE program involves two parts:

  1. Completion of the GEO application process.
  2. Completion of the CIEE application process.

Please note that the GEO deadline supersedes the CIEE deadline. An application fee is due at the time of application and is non-refundable under any circumstances.
