Established in 1993, the CIEE Study Center in Taipei provides you the unique opportunity for Mandarin Chinese language training using traditional characters and the latest teaching pedagogies. In addition, you will take a Language Practicum organized by CIEE. The third component of the academic program is a core course in English, structured to teach you about modern Taiwan from both social science and linguistic perspectives. Students with near-native proficiency in Mandarin should be aware that their language ability may exceed the most advanced courses offered.
A full course load is three courses for the semester and five courses for the academic year. You will be required to take a Chinese language course, the Chinese Language Practicum, and the CIEE core course.
Academic year students replace the core course and language practicum with a directed study or internship in the spring semester. The program includes Cultural Ambassadors, which are students from the University who become the CIEE students' friends, language partners, as well as sources of local perspectives. As part of the program, guided field trips are organized to historic and cultural sites in and around Taipei.
