Covadonga is the place where a famous battle took place in the year 722, one that marked the beginning of the “War of the Reconquest,” the eight-centuries effort to take control of the Iberian peninsula and that has become a key historical episode in the mythology of Spanish nationalism. We will visit other nearby towns so that students get to know the beautiful and historical Asturian landscape.

With Bilbao as a home base, explore the Old Quarter of the city and its two well known museums, The Guggenheim and the Museo de Bellas Artes. Spend a day in San Sebastián, home of the famous film festival, elegant shops and tapas bars and La Concha beach.

The ecosystems will include: mid-elevation cloud forests on both the western and eastern slopes of the Andes; the highest forests in the world (the Polylepis forests); and the grasslands and cushion plant communities of the páramo.
