Kalimera from Athens, Greece! My name is Lane Abraham (they/them), and I am a senior Educational Foundations major in the College of Education. I am a Eugene native, born and raised. Through this Diverse Duck Ambassador experience, I want to highlight what it's like to travel as a Queer and Non-Binary person. I chose Studio Art in Athens specifically to challenge myself as a queer educator who wants to teach using project-based learning (PBL), where students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects. Here, all my assignments take the form of projects, which makes my studies a true, hands-on PBL experience! And in one of the most beautiful places on earth, Athens.

Before coming to Greece, I was concerned about my safety and acceptance as someone who doesn't always present according to my assigned gender at birth. I also needed to find a supportive roommate. I'm grateful that GEO accommodated my request, which helped me feel more comfortable and secure, allowing me to focus on my experience.
Arriving in Athens was a culture shock. People here are laid back, no one rushes, and everyone gives you a nickname. The drive from the airport to my accommodations was beautiful, with city views that reminded me of home. I immediately noticed how much locals value relaxation — shops close for a midday siesta, then reopen and stay late. The sun is strong, and I cherish soaking up the vitamin D while seeing incredible art each day.
For students who may have similar identities to mine, you may feel isolated for a few days in the city and on the islands, but lean into your peers and find those connections! I've been so lucky to find lifelong friends in my peers from UO who have similar identities to mine! In a positive light, many of the traditional and contemporary art forms of Greece have numerous queer connotations. You will never not be surprised by the number of things that feel vaguely queer, and you can make a connection to.
Antío for now! See you soon!
