Studying abroad in Rome was a transformative experience that blended clinical learning with cultural discovery. Through the Atlantis program, I shadowed physicians at San Camillo Hospital across orthopedic surgery, urology, the stroke unit, and pediatric surgery. Observing procedures in these specialties gave me a broader perspective on global healthcare, while also challenging me to adapt to language barriers and new hospital environments.
Beyond the hospital, I explored Italy through weekly excursions, visiting incredible places while also enjoying authentic Italian food and even making my own pasta. I also made the most of my weekends by traveling to Florence and Barcelona, which made the experience even more memorable.

At first, starting the program was intimidating. I didn’t know anyone, and being away from home left me homesick. But as time went on, I formed strong bonds with my peers, who turned out to be one of the best parts of the journey. This program taught me to be independent, step outside of my comfort zone, and embrace the unknown. My biggest takeaway was realizing how much growth comes from immersing yourself in a new culture and learning from people with different perspectives. Studying abroad in Italy not only gave me invaluable clinical exposure but also lifelong memories, friendships, and a stronger sense of resilience and confidence.
