During my time in the Galapagos, I was able to visit two islands: San Cristóbal and Santa Cruz. While I was there, we went to visit local farms to learn about how produce is grown and distributed to the community. We also visited research stations where we learned how locals are testing and monitoring the ecosystems around the island. Additionally, we visited water and waste facilities sites, tortoise farms, and other local areas where we learned more about native species and the overall impact of climate change. I worked with students from two other universities as we researched and created proposals for new sustainable city developments.
My experience in the Galápagos is something I will take with me and use in my career as I was able to learn and understand how local community members live. Students should study abroad because they have the opportunity to connect with other students who share the same passion as you and can work together. My favorite part of the trip was going to visit the tortoise farm as we were able to see how large tortoises are and the amount of tortoises that live on the farm.
