Budgeting and Self-Trust in London

Hey Ducks! I’m Ashtin and as I reflect on the London study abroad experience as a low-income first-generation student, I have realized the importance of individualism and self-trust when arriving to a new country. Studying abroad is an exciting experience but can be difficult in terms of stress during arrival. For me, as it was my first time flying alone and internationally, I questioned my ability to navigate to the destination with ease. But if you trust yourself enough everything will work out the way it is supposed too.

Not only is self-trust important in the mental aspect, but being able to trust yourself with budgeting in another country is a concern I had when arriving in London. So far London has been a relatively expensive city but with the trust I have in myself, I have been able to refrain from unnecessary purchases which takes away an unneeded stress. Also, in terms of budgeting it allows you to purchase and experience the things you want the most. Overall, London has been a great city with so much to do, but at times it does get overwhelming in some respects. With lots of tours and activity throughout the city it is hard to find time for relaxation with so much to do and see. The best way to navigate a busy schedule is to again find your self-trust and know your limits.

So far, I have found that it is difficult to experience your study abroad the way you want too if you are not taking time for yourself. Whether that is sleeping more, taking a walk to the park, or getting some comfort food, it is important to find time for yourself especially in such a big city like London that is active with others at all times. As this is my first international experience in the same way I am a first-generation student, I did not expect so much support and friendship on my study abroad program as well. Whether it is the staff, students, or even locals, as long as you are open to talk there is always someone around you that would be happy to talk about anything; that is what makes the study abroad experience so unique. Being located so far from home doesn’t feel like reality at times, but it is the self-trust and individuality that can allow anyone to make the study abroad experience their own and for the benefit of themselves.
