Embracing culture shift in Japan

Hey everyone! I'm a little over halfway through my internship in Japan, and it’s been amazing. Is it what I expected? Yes and no – and that's what makes it so exciting and challenging at the same time.

Let me tell you, being an African American student in Japan has been quite the experience. The hardest part? Definitely the language barrier. Despite my efforts to learn Japanese before and during my stay here, I still find myself fumbling through conversations like a toddler learning to walk. It's humbling, to say the least!

My identity has played a huge role in my experiences here. As an African American, I've noticed that I sometimes stand out in crowds, which can be both thrilling and uncomfortable. I've had locals approach me curiously, asking where I'm from and why I chose to study in/visit Japan. These interactions have led to some amazing conversations and friendships, but they've also made me hyper-aware of my "foreignness" at times.

One thing I've learned is the importance of patience – with myself and others. I've had to reevaluate my beliefs about communication and social norms. For instance, the indirect communication style here initially frustrated me, but I've come to appreciate its nuances and the value placed on harmony in social interactions.

Culture shifts are definitely real! There were days when I felt like I was on cloud nine, marveling at the efficiency of the train system or the beauty of a local festival. But there were also days when I felt utterly lost, questioning why things were done certain ways and missing the familiarity of home.

To my fellow students considering study abroad, especially those who might worry about how their identities will be perceived: embrace the challenge! Yes, there will be moments of discomfort and confusion, but these are the experiences that will help you grow. Be open to new perspectives, be kind to yourself as you navigate unfamiliar territory, and remember that your unique background adds value to the diverse tapestry of international education.

This journey has taught me so much about myself, about Japan, and about the beautiful complexity of cross-cultural experiences. I'm excited to see what the rest of my time here holds!
