Hello! My name is Hana Smith, and I am a Global Studies major with a focus on international trade and tourism. I was born and raised in Japan until I was 15, which gave me a deep appreciation for cross-cultural communication and the nuances of interacting across many different cultures. Throughout my college career, I’ve studied how these cultural differences affect international business and communication, and I’m particularly interested in how marketing and company strategies can adapt when entering new countries with diverse languages and audiences. My long-term goal is to work in international marketing, consulting, or PR, hopefully for companies that connect the U.S. and Japan, so I can use both of my languages.

I chose London for several reasons. I hope to live in continental Europe in the future, and London, being a global business hub, seemed like the perfect opportunity to gain real-world experience in international work culture. From the moment I arrived, I have been actively seeking ways to build connections and a sense of community, knowing that this experience could shape my future career and personal life, opening doors and opportunities I never knew were reachable.
In just my first week, I joined a running club, attended Easter events at local shops and pop-ups, and began making local friends while networking with people in the area. I noticed that while Londoners often seem absorbed in their own world, a simple question or conversation can quickly open up friendly interactions. I love how the city feels alive with an endless list of things to do, places to explore, and opportunities to learn.
The biggest challenge so far has been missing some of the people closest to me back home. I think it’s natural to feel a bit lonely in a new city, but I know that as I create routines and continue to build my community here, that feeling will fade sooner than later.

Overall, my first week in London has been exciting, busy, and full of learning opportunities. I’m excited to continue exploring the city, connecting with people, and growing both personally and professionally in this international environment. For anyone with a similar background or interest in cross-cultural experiences, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone, engage with your surroundings, and take advantage of every opportunity to build your network—I really do believe London has something for everyone!
