Course Description

To the surprise of many, Siena, Italy has a long and colorful history along the Silk Road networks that have for centuries down to the present connected Europe and Asia.  Italian food, art, and fashion all bear the marks of both European and Asian tastes.  Today the New Silk Road project of Xi Jinping, current leader of the People’s Republic of China, once again finds Italy at a key position in Eurasian politics and economics.  Join us for a course that will travel with Marco Polo into the present through lively marketplace encounters and contemporary geopolitical debates. 

This course will fulfill Honors College 400-level Social Science Colloquium requirement.  

Core Education Course Requirements:  Social Science, Global Perspectives 

 

This course MAY also fulfill the following requirements. These are not guaranteed - talk with your home department first for approval: 

  • History 400 level topics course (Europe, Asia, World). Speak with your department for approval.
  • European Studies 300/400 social science or humanities elective.  
  • Global Studies intercultural experience requirement 
  • Geography (Culture, Politics and Place – GEOG 343). Also, Topics Seminar GEOG 407 or Experimental Course GEOG 410. Other upper-division courses approved by an advisor may be used to satisfy the elective requirement.
