This course traces the historical, political, social, and cultural journey of Spain up to the twentieth century. You will familiarize yourself with Spanish idiosyncrasies and the special and original characteristics of this country and its people. You will also get to know the concerns of the Spaniards (terrorism, unemployment and immigration [CIS survey, June 2004]) and understand their causes.

The intensive Spanish course includes grammar, vocabulary, writing workshop, and conversation starting at the intermediate level. The course takes place over five weeks for a total of up to 100 contact hours.Syllabus available upon request, email GEOinfo@uoregon.edu.

This course aims to give you a basic idea of Spanish culture and civilization through a study of the main elements of the culture. In this way, you will travel from the Paleolithic age to the eighteenth century. You will witness the most important social and historical events that built the essence of Spain, which are the same cultural characteristics you will experience during this course.

This course is a comparative study of nationalism in Spain and Cuba. Foreign and civil wars, migration, racial and ethnic divisions, and revolutions are among the social processes that have shaped national identities in both countries and that we will explore in this class.

Provides additional language development for students, emphasizing academic writing skills in Spanish. This course requires students to have completed two years of college-level Spanish.

Develops advanced language skills through the investigation of major currents of change in modern Spanish-speaking societies; gender issues, technology, revolution and counterrevolution. This course requires students to have completed two years of college-level Spanish.

Study of Spanish sounds, rhythms, and intonation; supervised pronunciation practice. This course requires students to have completed two years of college-level Spanish.

Develops advanced language skills through analysis of major historical influences in the cultures of Spanish-speaking regions: Spain, Latin America, and the United States. This course requires students to have completed two years of college-level Spanish.

This is as an intermediate level course that helps consolidate your prior knowledge of the Spanish language helping you acquire confidence, not only in understanding the language, but also in using the target language properly. You will not only have access to the language in a real context, but you will also gain cultural knowledge (traditions and social etiquette) which will help you understand the Spanish speaking world. Your interaction with the instructor will be ongoing in class.This course is offered in Block C of the Spring Quarter.

Develops advanced language skills through the study of cultural products (e.g., art, literature, film, music) in Spanish-speaking societies. This course requires students to have completed two years of college-level Spanish.
