Obtaining a passport is one of the first steps to complete when considering studying abroad. In an effort to support University of Oregon student participation in study abroad programs, the Division of Global Engagement has funded a passport initiative. This initiative awards a grant that covers the cost of a U.S. passport book and first-time processing fee to all eligible freshman and sophomore standing students.
The Smith Family Study Abroad Scholarship provides multiple awards of up to $1,000 for University of Oregon students who will study, intern or conduct research outside the United States. Selection is based on academic merit, project proposal, and a well-completed scholarship application. The GEO Scholarships Committee will review applications and make the awards.
The Richard D. Fulmer Endowed Study Abroad Scholarship provides a $1,000 scholarship annually to UO students participating in a GEO-sponsored study abroad program or internship over the summer. The Schwarzman Scholars is a fully funded, one-year master’s program, at Tsinghua University in Beijing that is designed to prepare students for global leadership roles. Students live and study together on the Schwarzman College campus where they spend a year immersed in an international community of innovators and leaders in business, politics and society.
Funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, the Thomas R. Pickering Fellowship Program provides undergraduate and graduate students with financial support, mentoring and professional development to prepare them academically and professionally for a career in the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service.
Rotary Peace Fellowship supports students interested in careers in peace building and offers two types of peace fellowships. The Master’s Degree Fellowship and Professional Development Certificate. Each Rotary Peace Fellowship covers tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and all internship and field-study expenses.
The Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (Sylff) is an award offered to students at specific Oregon universities, including the UO, that supports graduate student international research.
The Joan Bowman Siegel and Mark Siegel Travel Fund will make available 2-4 scholarships of $1,000-$2,000 for undergraduate students participating in UO-sponsored study abroad programs or internships in Asia, with a preference for Japan. Applicants must be enrolled in any major in the College of Arts and Sciences. Selection is based on academic merit and a well-completed scholarship application. Preference will be given to applicants with previous college-level Japanese language coursework. The GEO Scholarship Committee will make the awards.
The Khalid M. Al Suhaimi and Jane L. Goodwin Endowed Study Abroad Scholarship Fund has been established to provide support for UO students who plan to study, intern, or conduct research in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, the non-GCC member states of the Arab League, and countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Destination countries are ranked in order of preference below. Scholarship applicants who plan to study, intern, or research in Tier 1 nations will be given preference over applicants going to Tier 2 and Tier 3 countries, respectively.
Annually, up to five (5) $1,000-$1,500 scholarships will be awarded to students accepted for participation in GEO-sponsored study abroad or international internship programs in Japan during the academic year. This award is not available for summer programs. Selection is based on academic merit and a well-completed scholarship application. Preference will be given to applicants with previous college-level Japanese language coursework. The GEO Scholarship Committee will select the recipients.
