Gender, Race, and Class in Religions in the UK

This course examines many of the religious traditions found throughout the UK with special attention to issues of gender, race, social class, immigration status, and sexual identity within the tradition. Drawing from perspectives from women, gender, and sexuality studies, ethnic studies, religious studies, history, and sociology of religion, we will explore the intersection of religion with significant global issues for the 21st century.

Ghana Health and Society

This course is intended to enhance students’ understanding of health issues within the context of the developing world, with Ghana as a focus. Consequently, the nexus between the health status of the people and their socio-political habitus will be discussed. In this regard, students will be introduced to a wide range of macro issues such as the impact of colonialism, globalization and political economy on the health of Ghanaians. Other issues such as the social and cultural beliefs and practices that impact on the health-seeking behavior of the people will also be examined.

Ghana Today

This is an interdisciplinary course designed to study some of the major contemporary issues facing Ghanaian society after 50 years of independence from British colonial rule. Students interested in sociology, history, political science, economics, and cultural studies will find this course of particular interest as its subject matter dovetails with each of these related disciplines.

Globalization and Urbanization: China's Urban Transformation and What It Means for the World

This course introduces students to the recent literature on China's immense urban transformation process, spatial restructuring and urban problems it causes. Much of the course focuses on the post-1978 period, which fundamentally differs from the preceding 30 years of state socialism. The topics are mainly divided into three parts. Part 1 is on the process and the uniqueness of urbanization in China. Issues such as the socialist ideology, the household registration (hukou) system, rural-urban migration and globalization will be discussed.

Immigration, Nationalism and Border Politics in Spain and Morocco

This course is designed to provide in depth study regarding the history of immigration to Spain in general, its repercussions on society, and the relationship between Spanish and Moroccan communities in Spain and Morocco. We will study the historical and present day migratory movement of Moroccan citizens toward the Iberian Peninsula. This migration has been present for centuries, and still is today, creating one of the oldest and numerous communities in Spain. Commercial, political and labor relations have always been important, and will be studied along with borders and foreign relations.

Intercultural Dynamics

Each actor in a globalized economy is increasingly likely to work with colleagues and partners from diverse cultural environments. Cross-cultural awareness and communication skills are therefore essential assets. This course aims to introduce you to the main issues of intercultural dynamics within groups of various cultural origins. Concepts from communication sciences will be introduced and a range of theories from the social sciences will be drawn upon that help make sense of the specific challenges of intercultural encounters.

International Corporate Finance

This course will explain the establishment of financial statements and the functioning of financial markets and financial reporting strategies of listed companies, in general. It will also focus on the most important issues of international corporate finance, related to investment policy, capital budgeting and corporate valuation of the firm.

International Trade and Export Diagnosis

This course aims to provide a general understanding of international trade and, more specifically, knowledge of techniques used in export practice. It is composed of two parts. The first part deals with customs procedures, the overall international carriage of goods and also the techniques and tools of international payment. The second part, entitled Export Diagnosis, is a project based on a real case that you and other students will conduct. It will familiarize you with the conditions that SMEs have to meet in order to implement a successful export strategy.
