Media in the United Kingdom

This course is designed to introduce you to the particularities of the British media market and the unique character of British journalism.  Along the way, we will explore some of Britain’s journalistic traditions, from the respectability of the BBC to the scurrilous tabloid press. We will look at some of the critical academic reaction to these institutions and the role and practice of journalism in Britain today. Students are encouraged to compare and contrast the British media to that of the USA. Excursions will be worked into the timetable where possible.

Modern and Contemporary Art in London

This course highlights how, over the last 30 years, Britain has become a vibrant and fertile international center for the visual arts. Through the work on display in the museums and galleries of London, the course will attempt to relate the current confusing range of artistic styles with the revolutionary ideas of the first 25 years of the twentieth century, the impact of two world wars and more recent social and global events. Some reference will also be made to parallel developments in architecture.

Advanced Spanish Conversation and Composition

This course is ideal if you have already acquired a high level of Spanish and want to move up to mastery level. Specifically, you will practice advanced grammar structures and the use of idiomatic words and phrases to improve both their written and oral skills by means of grammar and vocabulary exercises, oral debates and weekly writing assignments. Your active participation on a daily basis is essential. 

Spain and Its Role in the European Union

This course gives a broad vision of the present situation of Spain and the countries that currently make up the European Union. At the same time, the institutions and the government agencies of the European Union are studied to understand the reach and future possibilities that this supranational organization offers as a united block immersed in today's world. Lastly, we will analyze the single currency, the Euro, and its impact on the economic future of the “Euro Zone” and the rest of the world’s economic powers.In the Spring Semester and Spring Quarter this course is offered in Block B.

Spanish Culture and Civilization: Contemporary Spain

This course is a historical, political, social and cultural journey through authentic Spain up to the twentieth century. You will familiarize yourself with the Spanish idiosyncrasies and the special and original characteristics of this country and its people. You will also get to know the concerns of the Spaniards (terrorism, unemployment and immigration [CIS survey June 2004]) and understand their causes.

Spanish Culture and Civilization: The Formation of Spain: From the Beginning to the Borbón Dynasty

This course aims to give you a basic idea of Spanish culture and civilization through a study of the main elements of the culture. In this way, you will travel from the Paleolithic age to the eighteenth century. You will witness the most important social and historical events that built the essence of Spain, which are the same cultural characteristics you will experience during this course.

Spanish Grammar and Conversation in Segovia

This is as an intermediate level course that helps consolidate your prior knowledge of the Spanish language helping you acquire confidence, not only in understanding the language, but also in using the target language properly. You will not only have access to the language in a real context, but you will also gain cultural knowledge (traditions and social etiquette) which will help you understand the Spanish speaking world. Your interaction with the instructor will be ongoing in class.This course is offered in Block C of the Spring Quarter.
