As an incoming junior at the University of Oregon studying business administration, Cole Masser decided to embark on a life-changing study abroad experience this summer - and he chose Costa Rica as his destination.
"I just really wanted to expand my horizons and learn more about myself and grow as a person," Cole explains. "I was deciding between Costa Rica, London, and a few other options, but Costa Rica ultimately won out because I love nature and the outdoors, and I thought it would be the perfect place to do that."
One of the most impactful parts of Cole's experience has been his internship at a local sustainable business. "Nobody on my team of seven people speaks English," he says. "That's definitely a barrier, but it's been really cool to get to know them more, even with the language difference. I'm understanding the different work culture here in Costa Rica compared to the US, and it's been a very fun experience so far."
Beyond the internship, Cole has been immersing himself in the local culture and way of life. "The meaning of 'Pura Vida' to me is a lifestyle - it's about everyone being kind of close to each other, and everyone just being relaxed and always having a good time," he shares. "It's definitely a lifestyle I want to live by in the future, because I want to bring some of that Pura Vida back with me when I return to the US."
One of the highlights of Cole's study abroad journey so far has been hiking in Manuel Antonio National Park. "I got to see a ton of monkeys up close and personal, and the beach was right there - it was just such a fun day.”
Overall, Cole's time in Costa Rica has been transformative. "If you're thinking of studying abroad, I would highly recommend it," he says. "I wasn't really the person who's very outgoing and kind of like stays within their own bubble or shell, but once I came to Costa Rica, I became more of an outgoing person, and I've made a lot of friends. It's been just a great time, and I would highly recommend going, even if you're not the most outgoing person - you'll be after the experience."
