For Mason, choosing Costa Rica as the destination for his internship wasn't just about gaining professional experience—it was about immersing himself in a culture known for its happiness, sustainability, and deep connection to community.

"Costa Rica is one of the happiest countries in the world, and you can feel that unique vibe as soon as you arrive," Mason shared. "It's an irreplaceable experience—something you can't replicate anywhere else."

During his time abroad, Mason interned with Bicichocolate, a small, sustainability-focused chocolate company. His role was multifaceted: he developed their website, designed a product catalog, supported social media efforts, and even led on-site tours. These hands-on responsibilities gave him a strong foundation in professional communication, design, and marketing.

"This internship has been wonderful for developing me as a professional," he said. "It's taught me to be adaptable, independent, and open-minded—skills that will definitely help me after college."

But beyond the technical skills, Mason was deeply inspired by the company's values. Unlike large corporations, Bicichocolate prioritizes its people and the planet. The company's commitment to sustainability is evident in every step of its process—from sourcing high-quality, healthy ingredients to fostering a supportive, family-like work environment.

"It's been eye-opening to see how different cultures approach work," Mason noted. "Here, it's not just about results—it's about creating a space where everyone can thrive."

Outside of work, Mason embraced the full cultural experience through excursions organized by Arcos, the study abroad program provider. From exploring beaches and volcanoes to participating in cooking classes and city tours, each activity helped him feel more like a local than a visitor.

"These experiences have taught me the nuances of Costa Rican culture," he said. "They've made me feel truly connected to the community."

Living in San Ysidro, Mason found a perfect balance of climate, community, and connection. He especially appreciated the welcoming atmosphere and the strong relationships he built with his coworkers—particularly his boss, Andrés.

"The work culture here is the best I've ever experienced. It really feels like a family," he said.
