Embracing the Local Culture and Community in Tanzania

Kate, a student from the University of Oregon in America, shares her experience studying abroad in Tanzania. She chose this program because it was in Tanzania, a country in Africa that not many Americans travel to, and the topic of human rights and social justice was exciting. Kate found learning about Africa's colonization and its ongoing impact to be "really eye opening and very sad" but also valuable knowledge she can now share. She also highlights how much she enjoyed the culture and community, noting that people are more friendly and community-oriented than in the US. Kate encourages others to pursue a study abroad program, advising them to "definitely, definitely go for it and do it" and to make the most of their time. She recommends venturing out beyond classes and embracing the local culture and community, as this may impact students even more than the coursework.
