Program Overview

In this exchange program, you will directly enroll in classes at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. A top university in Thailand, Chulalongkorn University was founded in 1917 by King Vajiravudh to honor his father, King Chulalongkorn. The current enrollment is approximately 40,000 students. The campus extends over a 456-acre tract of land, and includes facilities such as a health center, library, counseling center, and gym. 
    
There are a variety of student clubs available, including clubs focused on academics, sports, arts and culture, or community service. There are several festivals throughout the year on campus. One example is International Night, a welcoming party for international students, researchers, lecturers, etc. The event includes ceremonies to welcome international guests, cultural performances, and a feast of Thai and international food.     

Note: All undergraduate students at Chulalongkorn University, including exchange students, are required to wear school uniforms, which consist of a white shirt and pants for men, and white shirt and skirt for women. You will need to purchase your uniforms on campus. 

The capital city of Thailand, Bangkok is a bustling city of more than 8 million people. While Thai is the main language spoken in Bangkok, English is spoken in most shops and restaurants, and many street signs are bilingual. Learn more about Bangkok here.
 
Students are encouraged to study some Thai before and during the program, but all classes will be in English. The UO Yamada Language Center usually offers a 1-2 credit Thai self-study class each term, in case you want to pick up some Thai before going abroad.

Discount for Pell Recipients

To expand access to study abroad, GEO is offering a $400 discount for this program to UO students who currently have the Pell Grant as part of their federal financial aid (FAFSA).

Academic Details

Chulalongkorn University offers more than a dozen international undergraduate programs, which are taught entirely in English. You will be taking classes alongside other international students as well as with Thai students. The international programs include Accounting, International Business Management, Economics, Applied Chemistry, Architectural Design, Communication Design (graphic design and digital arts), Communication Management, Language and Culture, Psychological Science, and more. To search for classes, go to the web page of the individual Faculty/ department. Students register for classes in person after they arrive. Students will take most of their classes within the Faculty/ department they select at Chulalongkorn. You can take one class outside of your main department.

Graduate students: A variety of international programs, which are taught entirely in English, are available. Please note that the SASIN Graduate Institute of Business Administration, the medical school, and the Thai Studies programs are not open to exchange students.

You will typically enroll in 3-4 classes per semester, however, you may be able to enroll in up to 7 classes per semester.

Application process

The application process for this program is competitive: GEO staff will review your application materials, and a decision about your enrollment will not be made until after the application deadline. In some cases, an interview is required. If your program requires an interview, you will be contacted with further details about this process after the application deadline. Early applications are encouraged.

Successful applicants will receive an exchange nomination from GEO. Selection will be based on a holistic review of your application. This includes a review of your GPA, transcripts (including courses taken and in-progress), any additional requirements or prerequisites (see section "Additional Requirements"), and written statements. 

Applying for an exchange program involves 2 steps. If you receive a nomination from GEO, you will also need to complete the host university's application, which is administered and reviewed by your host university directly. Instructions will be provided after acceptance by GEO. The host university makes the final decision regarding acceptance into the program.

Housing Description

Most exchange students live in Chulalongkorn University International House, a 26-story residence hall for international students. Both single and double rooms are available, but note that due to limited capacity, placement is not guaranteed. Rooms come fully furnished with air conditioning, modern conveniences, 24-hour security and safety systems. The residence is included in the university’s shuttle bus services.
