Field Practicum (UO INTL 488/688)

Three to four quarter credits.This course will mix classroom learning and hands-on participation in a local organization. Service learning placements will be tailored to the interests and strengths of students. All placements have been vetted and will be coordinated by Professor Babacar Fall, the Senegalese Program Director. Past placements have included AFIA FM Community Radio Station, ENDA Tiers Monde Energy and Health Teams, and SOS Children's Villages.

Service-Learning Seminar

This Service-Learning seminar provides students with the opportunity to reflect and discuss their Service-Learning placements on a weekly basis and through written journals. The course will be taught in Spanish while in Segovia and in English while in Fes. The American Association of Community Colleges defines Service-Learning as a combination of “community service with academic instruction, focusing on critical, reflective thinking and personal and civic responsibility.

Ghana Service Learning Experience

Students will be placed in internship/service learning assignments at various non-governmental organizations (NGOs), healthcare providers, research institutes, and other local agencies, referred to as ‘attachments’ in Ghana, that are designed to complement the global health and development emphasis of the program, as well as to meet the individual interest of each student.
