Intermediate Spanish: Costa Rica

The program is organized so that the students can acquire a holistic foundation of knowledge based on four areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing—putting each of these in practice in any place or situation. Upon completion of the Intermediate Spanish as a second language course, the student should accomplish the following objectives:

Beginner Spanish: Costa Rica

The Beginner Spanish program focuses on developing communicativeskills through study, oral and written communication, and understanding ofSpanish as a second language. The goal is for the student to developeffectively and adequately in all of the contexts of the Spanish language andto achieve a better understanding of the culture in which he or she isimmersed. The student will build basic Spanish skills including personalinformation, asking and answering questions, fundamental vocabulary, andbasic conversation, reading and writing skills.

Historia y Cultura de Costa Rica

Este curso ofrece una exploración integral de la historia y cultura de Costa Rica, con un enfoque en cómolos procesos socioeconómicos, políticos y culturales han moldeado la identidad costarricense a lo largodel tiempo. El aprendizaje se nutre tanto del análisis académico como de la experiencia vivencial delestudiante con la familia Tica, actividades culturales y excursiones.

Asturian Culture

This course is an interdisciplinary study of Asturian Culture and History encompassing History, Art History, Food, Folklore, and Mythology. In addition to classroom meetings, the course will take excursions to sites of related interest in Oviedo and Asturias. Through primary and secondary source readings, and docent-led site visits to sites of historical and cultural interest, students will develop a critical understanding of some of the major topics in Asturian cultural history.

English-Spanish Translation–Introduction (Intermediate)

Los objetivos de este curso son: (a) introducir al alumno en la práctica de la traducción como instrumento de aprendizaje de una lengua extranjera; (b) reforzar sus conocimientos previos de español mediante su comparación con la lengua inglesa; (c) Practicar sobre las áreas de conflicto de ambas lenguas para un estudiante de habla inglesa; (d) lograr, con ciertas garantías, que los alumnos utilicen un discurso cada vez más complejo con la mayor corrección posible.Syllabus available upon request, email GEOinfo@uoregon.edu.

Hispanic Heritage

Este curso ha sido especialmente diseñando para los llamados hablantes de herencia, aquellos que a través de la interacción familiar fueron criados en un país de lengua no hispana pero en un ambiente de gran conexión cultural con el español. Estos estudiantes han crecido oyendo y, posiblemente hablando, en español en su entorno familiar, pero se sienten más cómodos en el idioma dominante de su país. No obstante, poseen una elevada motivación para perfeccionar su idioma “de herencia” y buscan una reconexión con sus raíces familiares.

History of Spain (Intermediate and Advanced)

Este curso ofrece una visión general de la Historia de España desde sus orígenes hasta nuestros días, atendiendo preferentemente a aquellos hechos, etapas o personajes que para el alumno puedan ser de mayor interés. Los contenidos teóricos se expondrán oralmente y estarán apoyados con presentaciones en Power Point, vídeos, mapas, gráficos o textos adaptándolos a su nivel idiomático. Se estimulará la participación activa del alumno, no sólo en el aula con exposición de comentarios y opiniones sino también desarrollando trabajos escritos y orales.

Immigration, Nationalism and Border Politics in Spain and Morocco

This course is designed to provide in depth study regarding the history of immigration to Spain in general, its repercussions on society, and the relationship between Spanish and Moroccan communities in Spain and Morocco. We will study the historical and present day migratory movement of Moroccan citizens toward the Iberian Peninsula. This migration has been present for centuries, and still is today, creating one of the oldest and numerous communities in Spain. Commercial, political and labor relations have always been important, and will be studied along with borders and foreign relations.

Intensive Spanish for Healthcare Professionals in Oviedo

This intensive Spanish course is aimed at persons who work or intend to work in the health care related field.  Rather than only teaching standard terminology, classes offered incorporate common dialect variants,  a as well as aspects of Latino culture that can impact the patient’s health and interaction with the medical system. Students are taught techniques and strategies for effective communication with Latino patients in a medical setting.
