Program Overview
London’s vibrant cultural life and history provide the setting for an immersive three-week musical exploration throughout this world capital. From the serenity of Evensong to the raucousness of a West End musical, students will engage with a wide variety of musical genres spanning from Handel to Hendrix, famed artists who lived next door to each other in London, two hundred years apart. Students will learn to listen critically and analytically to music originating from a wide variety of historical eras and born from diverse circumstances.
Scholarships: Scholarships for this program will be available, with awards ranging from $500-$2,500.

Academic Details
An interdisciplinary approach will encourage students to consider music in relation to the art and culture surrounding its creation. Designed for students from any major across campus (including music majors), students will attend concerts, visit historically significant venues, and participate in highly interactive class sessions. Journaling will be an important component of this course, prompting students to interact with academic and musical material, art, and culture both inside and outside of the classroom.
The six credit course, Music, Arts, and Culture in London, will count towards Arts and Letters. For Popular Music Studies and General Music majors this course will satisfy 6 credits in the History & Culture category.

Faculty and Staff
Sharon Paul is an award-winning professor at the University of Oregon's School of Music and Dance, where she teaches courses in choral conducting, repertoire, and pedagogy. The UO Chamber Choir, under her direction, has earned international acclaim at competitions in Sweden, Germany, Ireland, and Estonia in recent years. Her work and research interests focus on the application of current learning-science theories to the art and craft of music teaching, toward the goal of creating effective and engaging experiences in rehearsal and in the classroom.
Housing Description
Students will be living in shared housing in Central London. Students will be housed in twin rooms in either apartments or studios with shared living spaces. The housing will be conveniently located in either Zone 2 or Zone 3 in London. Students will be within walking distance of the Tube network, local supermarkets, restaurants and cafes.
The housing will be fully furnished and the cooking spaces will be fully equipped with utensils, plates, glasses and cookware. All apartments have Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, linens and 24/7 emergency support.
Your program application will have a housing questionnaire to gather information and assist with roommate assignments. Please note that students may share an apartment with students of a different gender.
