Program Overview

Dankook University (DKU), founded in 1947, is an up-and-coming, private research University in South Korea, just outside the capital city of Seoul. The International Summer School (ISS) at DKU offers you the opportunity to participate in a range of experiences, such as: an internship teaching English to DKU students, courses taught in English, and Korean language courses. The English Village Internship will allow you to gain valuable teaching experience at the college level as well as internship credits. All courses, with the exception of Korean-language courses, are taught in English. DKU holds numerous group activities and excursions for international students from all over the world.

Enroll in one to two courses for approximately five to ten quarter credits. If you are a student in the College of Education, you can also earn UO credit by participating in the English Village internship.

Scholarship opportunity: If you participate in the English Village internship, you will be offered a round-trip airfare reimbursement up to $1,000.

The application process for this program is competitive: GEO staff will review your application materials, and a decision about your enrollment will not be made until after the application deadline. In some cases, an interview is required. If your program requires an interview, you will be contacted with further details about this process after the application deadline. Early applications are encouraged.

Successful applicants will receive an exchange nomination from GEO. Selection will be based on a holistic review of your application. This includes a review of your GPA, transcripts (including courses taken and in-progress), any additional requirements or prerequisites (see section "Additional Requirements"), and written statements.

Applying for an exchange program involves 2 steps. If you receive a nomination from GEO, you will also need to complete the host university's application, which is administered and reviewed by your host university directly. Instructions will be provided after acceptance by GEO. The host university makes the final decision regarding acceptance into the program.

Discount for Pell Recipients

To expand access to study abroad, GEO is offering a $500 discount for this program to UO students who currently have the Pell Grant as part of their federal financial aid (FAFSA).

Academic Details

You can either participate in (1) The English Village Internship + the Academic Program or (2) the Academic Program only.

The English Village (EV) Internship, a part of DKU's Global Village, is an English immersion environment where native English-speaking students arrive three weeks before the Academic Program to teach English conversation to DKU students. You will work with a co-teacher to teach English classes to Dankook University students. Previous students have found that this is a helpful way to make connections with local Korean students. As an EV participant, you must also participate in the Academic Program. Note: you do not receive credits for participating in the English Village teaching internship. However, if you are a student in the College of Education, please speak with your department about how this internship may count towards a degree requirement.

For more information, visit the English Village Internship website.

The Academic Program (AP) consists of four weeks of classes taught by international and/or Korean professors in English. Classes meet four days a week for three hours a day. You will take one or two classes for a total of five or ten UO credits. Cultural activities and field trips are optional at nominal cost. Visit the Dankook International Summer Program website for a complete list of courses.

For the English Village, students will be assigned randomly either at the Jukjeon or Cheonan campus. The Academic Program takes place on the Jukjeon campus. See both campus maps on the DKU website. The Jukjeon campus is about an hour away from Seoul by public transportation and Cheonan is about an hour and a half away from Seoul by public transportation.
