Program Overview

*Final Budget, Housing Description, and Dates will be posted in mid-October.

Art, Mind, and Brain in Siena gives students the chance to explore the fascinating connections between psychology, neuroscience, and art, all while living in one of Italy’s most beautiful historic cities. Taught by Ulrich Mayr, Professor and Department Head of Psychology at the University of Oregon, the program combines two courses—Cognitive Neuroscience and Art, Mind, and Brain—that together fulfill upper-division requirements for Psychology and Neuroscience majors.

What makes this program especially exciting is the way Siena itself becomes part of the classroom. Instead of just reading about how the brain processes perception, memory, or creativity, you’ll step directly into museums, architectural sites, and historic spaces to see those ideas come to life. The city’s art and architecture provide vivid examples of how artists have tapped into human psychology for centuries to create powerful experiences. Living and studying in Siena not only deepens your academic learning but also immerses you in Italian culture, offering the kind of perspective and inspiration you can’t get from a lecture hall back home.

Beyond academics, this program offers the chance to experience daily life in Tuscany—sharing meals, exploring winding streets, and engaging with the vibrant traditions of Siena. It’s an opportunity to grow not only as a student, but also as a traveler and global thinker.

Academic Details

Students will take two courses during this four-week program. Students will earn eight credits total.

PSY 407 Art, Mind, and Brain - 4 Credits (40 Contact Hours)

This course explores how artists use principles of perception, memory, and learning to create powerful aesthetic experiences. Students will study different art forms and creativity itself, while connecting ideas directly to Siena’s museums, architecture, and cultural sites.

PSY 449 Cognitive Neuroscience - 4 Credits (40 Contact Hours)

This course examines how the brain supports functions like perception, memory, creativity, and decision-making, drawing on insights from neurological disorders and neuroimaging research. It provides a foundation for understanding the mind at a neural level and directly supports the companion Art, Mind, and Brain course.

Faculty and Staff

Dr. Mayr's primary research focus is on the relationship between memory, attention, and cognitive control, both from a general and a developmental/life-span perspective. His research methods include behavioral experiments, eye-tracking, and EEG or fMRI neuroimaging. As a secondary focus he also examines complex and social decision processes. Dr. Mayr is originally from Berlin, Germany and still collaborates frequently with scientists in Europe; he also is well acquainted with Italian art and history.

Housing Description

Experience life as part of an authentic Italian neighborhood, living within the medieval city walls of Siena. Residences are spread out within the city center. All are within easy walking distance (~15 min) of the GEO Center, and you will have small local grocers, restaurants, and cafés nearby.

You have two housing options, each with its own perks. You will be able to provide your preference, though we cannot guarantee that we can accommodate everyone in their first choice.

Apartments:

Apartments are fully furnished with beds, desks and a kitchen table and chairs. No two apartments are the same. Generally, there are 2-3 rooms per apartment, and you can expect to share a bedroom with one or two other GEO students. The kitchens are equipped with utensils, plates, glasses, cookware, an electronic oven and a gas stove. You will also receive two sets of linens and each apartment has access to a washing machine and drying rack (dryers are very uncommon in Italy).

Student Residence:

You can live in a residence with other international and Italian students, fully immersing yourself into the community. The student residence has single and double rooms, some with ensuite bathrooms and some with shared bathrooms (no more than 3 people/bathroom). Each room has a TV, fridge/freezer, safe, desks, nightstand, and sink. Kitchen and living areas are shared with your floor (~8 people/kitchen, students often enjoy cooking together or share meals with each other). Linens and towels are provided, and your rooms are cleaned weekly.
