Program Overview

Tokyo is Japan’s energetic capital, celebrated for its vibrant summer festivals, scenic cityscapes, and rich cultural heritage. The city comes alive in the summer with colorful fireworks displays, lively matsuri (traditional festivals), buzzing street food stalls, and open-air events in parks and neighborhoods.

This program offers students the opportunity to explore Japanese culture, society, art, and language in one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
Students can take courses in areas such as Japanese culture, religion, art and society, business communication, and Japanese language at either the beginning or intermediate level.This program is ideal for students interested in learning about Japanese culture and society while earning up to 9 credits during the summer term. Courses are taught in English, with Japanese language courses available for different proficiency levels.

If you are interested in applying to a CIEE program, we strongly advise you to meet with a GEO advisor prior to applying.

Selection for the program is based on a review of your written application, recommendation, transcript(s), and completion of the interview process. Qualified applicants are recommended by a GEO Study Abroad Program Advisor. The final selection of participants is made by CIEE.

IMPORTANT: Application for a CIEE program involves two parts:

  1. Completion of the GEO application process.
  2. Completion of the CIEE application process.

Please note that the GEO deadline supersedes the CIEE deadline. A CIEE application fee is due at the time of application and is non-refundable under any circumstances.

 

Discount for Pell Recipients

To expand access to study abroad, GEO is offering a $500 discount for this program to UO students who currently have the Pell Grant as part of their federal financial aid (FAFSA).

Non-UO students: Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.
