Legal Studies: Human Rights, Immigration, and the Rule of Law in Europe

Program Overview

Legal Studies: Human Rights, Immigration, and the Rule of Law in Europe is a five week program offered through a partnership between Learn International, UC Lille, and the University of Oregon. The program is designed to give students classroom experience with International Human Rights, Immigration, and the Rule of Law in Europe. Faculty members will include professors from the University of Oregon, alongside professors from UC Lille and is designed to give students a better understanding of the sociopolitical, legal, and economic forces which inform International decisions regarding human rights. Alongside their coursework students will have the opportunity to see these processes at work in real-time with relevant excursions including a visit to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. UC Lille's law program has existed since 1875 and has recently carved out a niche for it's notable International Focus alongside a top 5 ranking in business & competition law within France. This program is recommended for students studying Legal Studies, Global Studies, Political Science, or any other major with an emphasis on International Human Rights, Immigration, and Citizenship.

Lille's rich history is unique from the rest of France due to its strong links to the Flanders & Flemish regions of Belgium. This is immediately visible through it's unique architecture, cuisine, and local dialect, resulting in an extremely unique corner of Europe unlike any other. Lille's close proximity to Paris, London, and Brussels places it firmly in the center of the "Eurostar Triangle", offering students a rare opportunity to access metropolitan European hubs while living and learning in a city unlike any other.

Academic Details

Course 1: International Human Rights in the European Context (5 Credits): This is a survey course that provides an overview of how the international human rights regime operates within Europe. Brief overview of history of human rights and UN structure, followed by study of the EU human rights system. Case studies of human rights successes and challenges in France, comparative approaches to issues like homelessness or refugee/asylum issues.

Course 2: Immigration and Citizenship (5 Credits): Citizenship, race, ethnicity and nationality are legal constructions. Belonging to a community is a social and cultural construction. This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to study the way in which the American legal order has constituted citizenship. Students will be encouraged to scrutinize their ideas about culture, religion, "race" and sexuality, and the ways that the laws of citizenship have interfaced with and reinforced these categories. We will examine the cultural dimensions of law in relationship to forms of power and governance. Readings are drawn from anthropology, history, politics, sociology and geography to trace the relationship between legal systems and societal practices and beliefs.

Course 3: Intro to French Language and Culture (2 credits): This "Survival French" course gives students an introduction to French national culture as well as the regional culture of the Hauts-De-France region and the city of Lille. It is designed to give students a quick baseline in French for those who haven't studied it before, or to give students with French experience a refresher for their time abroad.
