Around Vienna

Included in class trips will be visits to the Austrian Parliament, the OPEC Secretariat offices, the United Nations Office at Vienna, as well as cultural excursions to provide an in-depth experience of this vibrant European capital.

Visit Agua Blanca

Agua Blanca is a small indigenous community located within Machalilla National Park, just north of the town of Puerto López. The community consists of around 300 inhabitants, cultivated plots, a museum, church, and small restaurants in a valley surrounded by the globally imperiled dry tropical forest ecosystem. Establishment of the national park in 1979 created challenges for Agua Blanca community members as it restricted their access to much of the landscape that had traditionally been utilized to support their livelihoods.

Río Muchacho Organic Farm

This complex of farms, food forests, natural areas, and structures dedicated to education and lodging is located in a transitional dry tropical forest north of Bahía de Caráquez. The farm is built around permaculture principles and serves as a demonstration site for sustainable farming and agroforestry practices. Our time here will expose us to a model of sustainable development that integrates food production, forest conservation, education, and ecotourism.

Canoe Tour of Isla Corazón

A mangrove island and important frigate bird rookery located in the Río Chone upstream from Bahía de Caráquez and San Vicente, Isla Corazón is a testament to the power of community conservation. Local fisherfolk restored the island by hand following an episode of deforestation that threatened to dismantle a key part of the ecosystem upon which their livelihoods depended. The island is currently protected by the national government and serves as focal point of a small tourism industry, yet nearby shrimp farms continue to pose dangers to the sustainability of the mangrove ecosystem.
