Program Overview

Looking for a global experience to begin your freshman year at the University of Oregon? Come study in London during Fall 2024, making connections with other incoming freshman as you begin your academic career with an immersive education abroad experience.

Upon arrival in London, you’ll follow in the footsteps of the Oregon Duck as the city becomes your classroom. Your classes will meet at the GEO in London Centre, a beautiful early Georgian town house in the heart of Bloomsbury in central London. Number 6 Great James Street was completed in 1721, and the wood paneling and ornate mahogany columns are original.

In addition, you’ll join your professors on excursions to historical sites and theatre performances to see your course materials come to life. Guest speakers from all walks of life will share their knowledge and passion for London. All program-related textbooks, excursions, performances, and local transportation are included in the program fee.

Program Itinerary (subject to change):

  • Saturday, August 31, 2024: Depart for London 
  • Sunday, September 1, 2024: Arrive in London
  • Saturday, December 7, 2024: Depart London

Minimum Age Requirement: Please note that due to United Kingdom laws, students must be 18 years or older by the London program departure date (August 31, 2024).

Application Instructions: To create an application for this program, please click the “Start an Application” button. If you are on a computer, this will be in the upper right hand of the screen, and if you are on your mobile phone, it will be at the bottom. You will be brought to the login page, where you can create an account. Please take the following steps:

  • Choose “I do not have login credentials to this site.”
  • Choose “I am not currently registered at an institution. You are not yet a UO student, and therefore should not plan on using any UO information.
  • Fill out the following form requesting your name, date of birth, gender, and email.

When you submit this form, an account will be generated for you, and an email will be sent to you with your login and password information. If at any point you have issues with this process, please contact geoinfo@uoregon.edu.

This program has a rolling admission application process: GEO staff will complete a review of the application materials of complete applications in the order that they are submitted (“first come, first serve”). Decisions about acceptance will be made shortly after you submit a complete application. There are some programs that fill fast, some even before the deadline. Students are encouraged to complete applications and commit to programs early.

Discount for Pell Recipients

To expand access to study abroad, GEO is offering a $500 discount for this program to UO students who currently have the Pell Grant as part of their federal financial aid (FAFSA).

Academic Details

Students on the program will each take four courses, each course counts towards five University of Oregon credits, for a total of 20 UO credits. All courses are taught at the 200-level by GEO London faculty, with many years of experience teaching University of Oregon students abroad.

The GEO classroom site is centrally located in the Bloomsbury area near the British Museum and the University of London. Classes and excursions are held Monday through Friday.

All students will take the following two courses:

  • Britain Today
  • London in a Global Context

After being accepted to the program students will choose two of the following elective courses:

  • Modern and Contemporary Art in London
  • The Play's the Thing Theatre course
  • Media in the United Kingdom
  • History of Women and Gender in the United Kingdom

Non-UO students: Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.

Housing Description

London Housing

Students will be living in shared housing in Central London. Students will be housed in twin rooms in either apartments or studios with shared living spaces. The housing will be conveniently located in either Zone 2 or Zone 3 in London. Students will be within walking distance of the Tube network, local supermarkets, restaurants and cafes.

The housing will be fully furnished and the cooking spaces will be fully equipped with utensils, plates, glasses and cookware. All apartments have Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, linens and 24/7 emergency support.

Your program application will have a housing questionnaire to gather information and assist with roommate assignments. 

 

Post-program housing

Students on this program will have the opportunity to apply for UO University Housing for Winter Term 2025 in Eugene. This application opens in late November, instructions will be provided during the program. Students will not be able to select specific rooms, but will be able list their preferred residence halls and room types in the application
