German Language and Culture in Berlin

Program Overview

Note: GEO's Summer Session I is NOT open to UO students because program dates overlap with the UO Spring Term.

This program is open to undergraduate students in any discipline and with any level of German language from beginner to advanced. You will enroll in classes at the Freie Universität of Berlin (FUBiS) alongside students from more than 50 countries. You can either enroll in two content classes taught in English, or enroll in one content course in English and one German language course. Content courses are available in many academic disciplines. 

Berlin is a city of contrast and fusion: East meets West, history meets future, art meets underground. As a European center of politics, culture, and art, your classes make use of Berlin's vast historic, cultural, and political institutions and resources. Field trips to museums, memorials as well as political and cultural institutions are integral parts of the curriculum. 

The FUBiS staff are a dedicated team, motivated to organize this summer program for international students. FUBiS carefully selects its teaching faculty, and instructors must have demonstrated outstanding competence and experience in their particular discipline. Therefore, the FUBiS faculty are an exceptional group made up from many regions around the world.

Discount for Pell Recipients

To expand access to study abroad, GEO is offering a $500 discount for this program to UO students who currently have the Pell Grant as part of their federal financial aid (FAFSA).

Academic Details

Note: GEO's Summer I corresponds to FUBiS term II, and GEO's Summer II corresponds to FUBis term III. GEO's Summer I session is currently not available to UO students because program dates overlap with the UO Spring Term.

Course Availability:

If your goal includes learning German, then you will enroll in one A-Track Semi-Intensive German Language Course and one B-Track Subject Course. 

If you only want to take classes in English, then you will choose one A-Track Subject Course and one B-Track Subject Course.

A-Track Semi-Intensive German Language courses will not exceed 15 students per course. 

B-Track Subject courses are kept small, with maximum of 18 students per course.

Credit:

FUBiS uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) which is a workload-based system for measuring and comparing study results. ECTS credits are transferred to the UO at the rate of 1 ECTS credit = .75 UO quarter credits. 

Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.

Housing Description

In this program, you can choose to live with a host family, stay in a shared apartment, or stay in the Student Hotel. Each of these options are different prices.

There are two locations for student dorms and they are about a 30-45 minute commute from the university. The student dorms include a shared kitchen and shared bathroom spaces. These are the least expensive housing option.

The homestays vary from relatively small, centrally located apartments to larger private homes outside of central Berlin. Host families are carefully screened and provide good, affordable accommodation offering you the opportunity to develop your independence and language proficiency by participating in family, community, cultural and recreational activities. Homestays include daily breakfast and one additional meal per day. Many cherish their homestay experience as one of the most rewarding aspects of the Berlin program and remain lifelong friends with their host family.

The Social Hub is a hotel that is centrally located in the middle of Berlin and includes a private room and bathroom. This is the most expensive option of the three.

**This budget reflects the cost of a single room in a shared apartment in Studierendenwerk. Housing options are available on a first come, first serve basis. Should you choose or be placed in one of these other options, the following cost will be charged for housing:

  • Single room in shared apartment in Studentendorf: $820
  • Homestay (includes two meals a day): $973
  • The Social Hub (student hotel – meals not included): $1640

Optional Excursions: If you choose to participate in these optional excursions, the cost for the excursions will be added to your Program Fees Paid to GEO:

Cancellation Policy

Note that scholarship funds are not able to be applied to program deposit.

IMPORTANT: The GEO Cancellation Policy is effective from the time a student agrees to pay their non-refundable program deposit or electronically signs the program commitment form, regardless of application or acceptance status. It is essential to read this policy before a potential cancellation takes place, to fully understand the withdrawal and cancellation penalties, and to understand what it means financially to commit to a study abroad program.

Students who cancel their participation must notify GEO in writing. Email is acceptable (geoinfo@uoregon.edu). Verbal notification to GEO or notification given to a non-UO campus study abroad office is not sufficient.
