Program Overview
Come with only two semesters of German, leave with two years completed.
This program is part of the longstanding Oregon and Baden-Württemberg state-to-state program. It is designed for students who have completed two terms (101 and 102) of first year German. Students earn the equivalent of the third term of first year German and all of second year German in one semester of intensive language study in beautiful Heidelberg.
Universität Heidelberg is Germany’s oldest university, founded in 1386. It is ranked as one of Germany’s most prestigious institutions. Despite being a large, bustling university city, Heidelberg maintains a provincial charm. Mountains filled with hiking trails frame the Medieval and Baroque cityscape below, offering gorgeous views of the Neckar River and castle ruins.

Academic Details
The Heidelberg Accelerated Program offers an intense set of German as a Foreign Language (DaF) classes during Spring Term. Upon arrival in Heidelberg, students will take a placement test to determine which level class they place into. Oregon students will join other international students at Heidelberg and have approximately 20 hours a week of German Language classes. With approval from UO and the Oregon Study Center Tübingen, students can remain in Germany after the HAP spring term and continue their studies at a German institution in the fall.
- Students will take Intensive German language classes with other international students at Heidelberg. Students go to Germany for the spring term with two terms of completed German, they leave with two years fulfilled. Students earn 18 UO credits.
- HAP students will have the opportunity to take additional courses (in English) at Heidelberg University. They will have the support of the Oregon Study Centre and Resident Director, located in Tubingen. Classes are 20 hours per week for 15 weeks.

Non-UO students: Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.
Additional requirements
The program is open to students from all fields of study. To be eligible, students must meet the following minimum requirements before departure:
- Two terms of first-year German (or the equivalent)
- A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above
Students must continue to make satisfactory academic progress throughout the application process and during their study abroad program, and otherwise comply with policies and procedures of the host university, IE3 Global, and UO.
Application process
Early application is advised. Selection for the program is based on a review of the student's written application, transcripts, recommendations and completion of the interview process.
IMPORTANT: Applications for IE3 programs involve two parts. Both parts of the application are due by the application deadline.
- Completion of the GEO online application.
- Completion of the IE3 online application, which includes the following:
- Essays
- Two Recommendations
- Official Transcripts
Please note that students cannot begin the interview process until both applications are complete.
Application fees are due at the time the applications are submitted and are non-refundable under any circumstances.
In addition to the process described above and below, graduate student applicants must also complete the Graduate Enrollment in GEO Study Abroad Programs form. This form requires that you obtain pre-authorization for your program from your adviser, department head and the Graduate School.
Housing Description
Heidelberg students are housed in single rooms in a residence hall (Wohnheim). Each room has a bed, desk, chair, shelves, large closet, and a sink. Depending on the Wohnheim, students may have either en suite kitchen and bath facilities, or communal facilities that are shared with about 8-12 other students. Your floor mates will be German and international students.
Dorms are co-ed but bathrooms and/or shower stalls can be locked. Shared laundry facilities exist in each building complex. All student housing has in-room internet access.
