Program Overview

Siena is a humble yet vibrant university town in Tuscany, arguably the most beautiful region of Italy. Relax in a café on the Piazza del Campo, a medieval square and public gathering space, and stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets while exploring the 17 contrade, or districts.

As one of the smaller cities where GlobalWorks offers internships, Siena offers a more familiar pace of life with an economy built on tourism and agriculture. Siena is an ideal place to experience medieval and modern Italian culture, food, art, architecture, and politics while interning with local Italians.

What is GlobalWorks?

GlobalWorks internships are personalized internship programs that bring you out of the country, and into the workplace. We connect academic study with real-world experiences by providing full-time international internship opportunities to UO students in various career fields. Working with local professional internship providers in locations around the world, we provide individualized placements for UO students. Students earn UO credits and life-changing work experience in a different culture. Immerse yourself in a new city, earn UO course credits, and gain professional experience with a GlobalWorks internship.

Internship Career Fields:

  • Business and Accounting
  • Environment and Sustainability
  • Journalism and Communications
  • Social Science

NOTE FOR SUMMER 2025: Please note that for the Summer 2025 quarter, there are only a few available placements for students to work in Siena. Students will indicate their top preference of fields from the options above. Then, students coordinate with our GEO Center in the area and will work for one of two different beautiful local estates that have vineyards and olive groves and are run as certified organic farms. In addition, the space hosts wildflowers, animals, a small farm, and a vegetable and herb garden. Although students can indicate their preferred field, note that they will not get to 'choose' which vineyard to work for.

Additionally, students should be aware that they will need to commute to and from winery. Depending on the location, this can be done by bus and walking, or by cab, but these are additional expenses that are not included in the program budget, and students should pack and plan accordingly.
