Led by a faculty member in the Department of the History of Art and Architecture, Art and Architecture in London immerses students in the global and culturally vibrant metropolis of London. Through myriad tours and guest lectures, students learn from leading art, architectural and design historians, and museum and gallery professionals. Course readings, discussions, daily field trips, and hands-on interactive projects take full advantage of London as a creative laboratory, allowing students to explore the city’s most exciting art, architecture, and design developments through art historical contextualization, current critical debates, and curatorial considerations.

Faculty-Led Scholarship Opportunity

Applicants to this program are eligible for program-specific scholarship funds. Award recipients are chosen based on academic merit, financial need, and overall quality of their essay. Individual awards range from $500-$1,500. To be considered, apply to the GEO General Scholarship by the advertised deadline for the term you will be abroad. Students who apply will automatically be considered for all available funding within the General Scholarship, including this program's scholarship funds.

Discount for Pell Recipients

To expand access to study abroad, GEO is offering a $500 discount for this program to UO students who currently have the Pell Grant as part of their federal financial aid (FAFSA).

Academic Details

All students will take a 6-credit course Modern Art, equivalent to ARH 353. 

 

Full syllabus to be published soon but this survey course introduces students to major works and movements in modern art roughly from the last three decades of the nineteenth century to the end of the Second World War. The program will take advantage of London as a classroom, visiting galleries, museums, performances, and other excursions, to provide experiential learning opportunities.

Faculty and Staff

Joyce Cheng, Associate Professor Department of the History of Art and Architecture is the faculty leader for Summer 2025.

Joyce is principally a scholar of surrealism, she researches and teaches in the visual arts, poetics, and aesthetic theories of international modernism and avant-gardes. At the University of Oregon, she teaches courses on the history of European and globalizing modern art, with a focus on symbolism, dada, surrealism, primitivism, and the cultural and intellectual history of the interwar period. In her advanced seminars, she explores cross-disciplinary issues in the studies of art and aesthetics, such as style, taste, play, work and making.

Housing Description

Students will be living in shared housing in Central London. Students will be housed in twin rooms in either apartments or studios with shared living spaces. The housing will be conveniently located in either Zone 2 or Zone 3 in London. Students will be within walking distance of the Tube network, local supermarkets, restaurants and cafes.The housing will be fully furnished and the cooking spaces will be fully equipped with utensils, plates, glasses and cookware. All apartments have Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, linens and 24/7 emergency support. Your program application will have a housing questionnaire to gather information and assist with roommate assignments. Please note that students may share an apartment with students of a different gender.

IMPORTANT: The GEO Cancellation Policy is effective from the time a student agrees to pay their non-refundable program deposit or electronically signs the program commitment form, regardless of application or acceptance status. It is essential to read this policy before a potential cancellation takes place, to fully understand the withdrawal and cancellation penalties, and to understand what it means financially to commit to a study abroad program.

Students who cancel their participation must notify GEO in writing. Email is acceptable (geoinfo@uoregon.edu). Verbal notification to GEO or notification given to a non-UO campus study abroad office is not sufficient.
