Program Overview

The spring quarter Psychology in London program offers students the opportunity to gain real international work experience in the field of psychology and global health and earn major satisfying upper division Psychology credit, all while immersing themselves in one of the most significant and fascinating international cities in the world. You will take courses from faculty who are experts in psychological history and research. Gain practical and professional experience  in an individualized internship placement in a variety of industry sectors. This intensive program in a fast-paced city will require you to balance your academic, work, and personal responsibilities while allowing you to make progress towards your educational, professional, and personal goals by experiencing all that London has to offer.

Note: if you participate in an internship, you must apply for a Visa to the UK. This will require applying to UKVI for a student visa, going to a biometric appointment at a USCIS office (Portland has the only one in Oregon), and then sending your passport to New York to get the visa.

Discount for Pell Recipients

To expand access to study abroad, GEO is offering a $400 discount for this program to UO students who currently have the Pell Grant as part of their federal financial aid (FAFSA).

Academic Details

You will enroll in two or three courses along with your internship placement and required internship seminar. Three course options will be upper division, major satisfying Psychology courses.

Courses offered: 

  • Social Psychology (equivalent to PSY 306)
  • Health, Cognition and Wellbeing (equivalent to PSY 300-level elective
  • Psychology Practicum (equivalent to PSY 409)
  • Managing People in Organizations (equivalent PSY 300 level elective)
  • Contemporary Britain in a Global Context (GLBL 388)

London will serve as a classroom as much as the center itself. Academic activities are integrated with excursions, giving you an inside look into the vibrant history of psychology research in the United Kingdom. Courses are taught by British faculty who have experience teaching US students as well as considerable practical experience in the related field they are teaching. Visits to several well-known cultural locations in the city and surrounding area are also planned. All instruction is in English. Courses make use of a variety of materials and texts, all of which are included in the program fee. Students should be prepared for a rigorous academic experience and a busy schedule. Classes and internship placements will run Monday-Friday every week.

Internship Details

London internships are available in many fields, such as the Arts, Business, Start-ups, Marketing/PR, Financial Services, Hospitality & Tourism, HR, Politics, NGOs, Education, Technology and more! The internship placement requires additional application steps, please click here to learn more about the process. Students participating in an internship can expect the following support during their program:

 Due to the competitive nature of internships, it is recommended to work with a study abroad and/or career center advisor to review your resume and prepare for an interview in advance. Some examples of past placements have included:

Housing Description

Students will be living in shared housing in Central London. Students will be housed in twin rooms in either apartments or studios with shared living spaces. The housing will be conveniently located in either Zone 2 or Zone 3 in London. Students will be within walking distance of the Tube network, local supermarkets, restaurants and cafes.

The housing will be fully furnished and the cooking spaces will be fully equipped with utensils, plates, glasses and cookware. All apartments have Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, linens and 24/7 emergency support.

Your program application will have a housing questionnaire to gather information and assist with roommate assignments. Please note that students may share an apartment with students of a different gender.
