Spanish Literature: Spain in Crisis–From the Disaster of 1898 to Democracy

In this course you will study Spanish literature around 1898. This was a time of crisis in Spanish society from which a group of writers surfaced that made up the Silver Age of Hispanic arts. The period studied is after the Civil War of 1936 with the censor limitations of Franco. Lastly, authors of the restored democracy will be read and studied.In the Spring Semester and Spring Quarter this course is offered in Block B.

2nd Year Spanish - Conversation in Rosario

In this course, will participate in a series of conversational activities in order to develop their spoken Spanish. Activities will focus on building vocabulary, improving pronunciation, and learning culturally appropriate pragmatic conversation skills (turn taking, conventional turns of phrase, formulaic greetings, etc.). This course requires students to have completed one year of college-level Spanish.

Using different conceptual and textual tools, you will expand your opportunities for understanding the Spanish language. In this sense, the priority will be speaking and reading comprehension. This course requires students to have completed two years of college-level Spanish.

The pre-structure of Italian journalism is different from that of American journalism and the journalistic tradition, as well as the state of the media of a country, has much to tell us about that culture. Media products do not necessarily mirror reality, but the media themselves, as a powerful symbolic agent that creates reality, are an important piece of the mirror image of society.

Sustainable Development in Latin America

Ecuador provides an ideal setting for exploring issues related to sustainable development. This course will examine the tensions, challenges, and possibilities for reconciling development and conservation in the tropical dry forest zone, a critically important and globally imperiled ecosystem. Course activities center around the city of Bahía de Caráquez, which has attempted to rethink its development trajectory after a series of environmental disasters in 1998 and 2016 that exposed the human toll of unsustainable development practices.

From Handel to Hendrix: A Musical Exploration in London

London’s vibrant cultural life and history provide the setting for an immersivethree-week course exploring music performed throughout this world capitol. From the serenity of Evensong to the raucousness of a West End musical, students will engage with a wide variety of musical genres throughout the course. Students will learn to listen critically and analytically to music originating from a wide variety of historical eras and born from diverse circumstances. An interdisciplinary approach will encourage students to consider music in relation to the art and culture surrounding its creation.
