Program Overview

Ghana to the World is a four week program offered by the University of Ghana. During this program, you will be immersed in discussions on Africa-centered topics, and experience the vibrant and diverse regions in Ghana. You will learn from local experts about the modern technologies, cultural foundations and evolution, and community systems shaping current initiatives for social impact and transformation in Ghana.

As the capital of Ghana, Accra is well known for its traditional and contemporary arts, vibrant music scene, and bustling outdoor markets. Experience the welcoming hospitality of the Ghanaian people as you discover the wide variety of cultural events, festivals and performances Accra has to offer. 

Program Highlights:

  • Participate in a service-learning project up to 30 hours
  • Weekend and day excursions to museums, markets, national parks in multiple regions of Ghana
  • Cultural activities such as Kente weaving, dance classes, pottery, bread making, tie and dye production
  • Social activities such as live music and day-trip to local beach

Discount for Pell Recipients

To expand access to study abroad, GEO is offering a $500 discount for this program to UO students who currently have the Pell Grant as part of their federal financial aid (FAFSA).

Academic Details

Students will choose one course from two groups of courses, for a total of two courses on the program.

  • First course options:
    • Appropriate Technology for Development in Africa: 

      Examine the practices and outcomes of technology application in societal development in Africa that could be described as sustaining or disrupting Africa social, cultural, environmental, and political systems. Key sectors of African economies such as agriculture, energy, healthcare, traditional industry, and waste and water management are the focus of assessing the technology outcomes for the sustainability of livelihoods and societies. 

      OR

    • Gender and Culture in African Societies: 

      Explore how culture shapes the positions of women and men in African societies through key concepts of cultures and cultural practices as dynamic, contested and rooted in socio-economic conditions and power relations. 

  • Second course options:
    • Chieftaincy and Development in Africa: 

      Examine the history of chieftaincy and other forms of traditional political leadership in Africa, with concern towards the relationship between traditional authority and social, cultural, political and economic transformation that took place from precolonial times to the present.

      OR

    • Africa and the Diaspora: 

      Examine the historical, socio-economic, and cultural dynamics of Africa and the Diaspora.

Housing Description

You will live on-campus in the Yiri Lodge at the University of Ghana. Rooms at the Yiri Lodge are double occupancy. You will have your own bed, wardrobe, table and bathroom inside your room.
