Program Overview

Study in Santiago de los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic this summer and immerse yourself in the daily life of a vibrant developing Caribbean Island, where fascinating historical, commercial, and ecological treasures intersect. This summer study abroad program provides an excellent opportunity to explore Dominican and Greater Caribbean history, culture, language, and more.

Santiago de los Caballeros is conveniently located in the central Cibao valley in the northeastern part of the island, known as La Ciudad Corazon (the Heartland City), offering a glimpse of authentic Dominican culture. CIEE Santiago-DR organizes activities to help increase your intercultural understanding and enhance your Spanish language skills while enjoying the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean.

CIEE offers two different summer sessions. Summer Session I is not open to UO students, as it overlaps with the end of spring term.

Consult with your GEO Study Abroad Advisor before starting an application.  

Selection for the program is based on a review of your written application, recommendation, transcript(s), and completion of the interview process. Qualified applicants are recommended by a GEO Study Abroad Program Advisor. The final selection of participants is made by CIEE.

IMPORTANT: Application for a CIEE program involves two parts:

  1. Completion of the GEO application process.
  2. Completion of the CIEE application process.

Please note that the GEO deadline supersedes the CIEE deadline. An application fee is due at the time of application and is non-refundable under any circumstances.

Discount for Pell Recipients

To expand access to study abroad, GEO is offering a $500 discount for this program to UO students who currently have the Pell Grant as part of their federal financial aid (FAFSA).

Non-UO students: Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.
