Global Perspective on Urbanism in Hong Kong

Program Overview

Spend 5.5 weeks in Hong Kong, where interdisciplinary study, experiential learning, and cultural immersion come together in one of Asia’s most dynamic cities. Students take two courses during the program: a required core course, Global Perspectives on Urbanism, and one elective from The Chinese University of Hong Kong International Summer School (CUHK ISS). Together, the two courses allow students to explore Hong Kong through both a shared urban sustainability lens and their own academic interests.

  • Global Perspectives on Urbanism: The program’s required core course uses Hong Kong as a living laboratory to examine urban sustainability through mobility and accessibility, public space and placemaking, food and consumption, and waste and resource systems. Students move beyond the traditional classroom through field observation, site visits, data collection, reflection, and collaborative studio work. Working in interdisciplinary teams, students investigate real urban sustainability challenges and develop practical, evidence-based proposals in response.
  • One CUHK ISS elective course:  Students select one elective from six broad academic areas: Environment, Science and Technology; Exploring Hong Kong; Global Business and Management; Society and Human Interaction; Understanding China; and Chinese Language. This structure allows students to connect the shared urban experience with their own major, career interests, or personal areas of curiosity. Check the Summer 2026 course list. (Please note that course offerings may vary from year to year.)

Beyond the classroom, students have fully access to CUHK International Summer School cultural activities and excursions designed to deepen their engagement with Hong Kong. Past activities have included city and heritage tours, visits to local institutions and communities, traditional workshops, food and cultural experiences, and opportunities to explore different parts of Hong Kong.

As CUHK summer students, participants will have access to university facilities and study in an international campus environment alongside local Hong Kong students and students from around the world. Throughout the 5.5-week program, coursework, field experiences, teamwork, cultural activities, and everyday life in Hong Kong come together to create an immersive academic and intercultural experience.
