Program Overview

This semester-long program is for students who have strong classical interests and background.  You will attend classes as part of the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies (ICCS) Rome, a program administered by Duke University.  ICCS, commonly known as “the Centro,” is a leading study abroad program for undergraduate students with a strong interest in the classical world. Founded in 1965 through a collaboration of ten U.S. colleges and universities, ICCS has since expanded to include more than 100 member institutions. The program offers undergraduates the chance to study in Rome, focusing on ancient history, archaeology, Greek and Latin texts, Italian language, and classical art.

Please be sure to check out the Centro website at TheCentroRome.org, which offers fuller illustrations and explanation of the program. Scholarship Opportunity:  UO Students are eligible for the ICCS Scholarship Fund.  The ICCS Scholarship Fund provides for students in need of financial support to study at the Centro. In recent years, no student has had to forego a semester at the Centro because of the Cost. In order to be considered for a scholarship, students must submit the FAFSA/ISIR so that ICCS can ascertain the student’s Estimated Family Contribution. Students applying for this scholarship must file a current FAFSA application at their home institution. If the student receives financial aid from their institution which is applicable to the ICCS program tuition and fees, they should also submit that award letter. All materials must be submitted with the program application, by the application deadline. The Managing Committee will make admissions decisions and then review scholarship applications. Students are informed of scholarship awards within four weeks of the application deadline. All information received for consideration of a scholarship award is kept strictly confidential and seen only by the Managing Committee and a limited number of staff in Duke University's Global Education Office.

Application Deadline(s): All scholarship materials must be submitted with the Duke University Program Application by March 15 for Fall 2026 and October 1 for Spring 2027.

Dates and Deadlines

Term Year Deadline Arrival Date Departure Date
Fall Semester 2026 03/01/2026 late August mid December
Spring Semester 2027 09/15/2026 late January early/mid-May

If you are interested in applying to the Duke Rome in Classics program, we strongly advise you to meet with a UO Classics Advisor prior to applying.

The application process for this program is competitive: Successful applicants will receive a nomination from UOs Classics Department through GEO, and students will then need to complete Duke University's application.  Duke University makes the final decision regarding acceptance into the program. Selection for the program will be based on a holistic review of your application. This includes a review of your GPA, transcripts (including courses taken and in-progress), any additional requirements or prerequisites (see section "Additional Requirements"), written statements and a UO nomination.

IMPORTANT: Application for the Rome in Classics program involves two steps:
1. Completion of the GEO application process by March 1, 2026 for Fall semester  / September 15, 2026 for Spring semester
2. Completion of the Duke application process by March 15, 2026 for Fall 2026 and October 1, 2026 for Spring 2027.

Please note that the GEO deadline supersedes the Duke deadline.
