The photo contest aims to showcase the unique and enriching experiences of students participating in a study abroad program. Participants are encouraged to submit photos that capture the essence of their study abroad journey.*

Eligibility

The contest is open to all current University of Oregon students enrolled in a study abroad program for the summer 2024 term. Participants must have taken the photos themselves during their study abroad experience. 

Categories

  • School spirit. Show us throwing the O or wearing/posing with your Duck gear abroad.
  • Something that makes your host country unique. Is it the clothing? The architecture or landscape? A cultural practice?
  • Activity/Excursion. Did you go on a tour with your class? Did you learn how to cook a local dish or make a cultural item? 
  • In the classroom. What does your classroom look like? What makes it unique?
  • Food and Culture. What is a typical dish that is made in your host country? How do people gather to eat? What traditions exist around food?
  • Video. A maximum 30 second clip or series of clips to highlight a certain aspect of your host country such as:
    • Excursion/activity pictures and videos
    • Day in the life abroad (vlog style highlighting your commute, your classroom, what you do for fun, cultural activities) 
    • What I eat in a day 
    • What’s in my bag/pack with me to...
    • Night/weekend/work/school life in (place) 
    • Come with me to (activity) 
    • What no one tells you when traveling to... 
    • What I’ve learned about the culture 
  • Best overall. Could your photo make the cover of National Geographic?

Guidelines for Photo and Video Submissions

  • Each participant may submit up to 5 photos per photo category, and 3 videos for the video category.
  • Photos should be high resolution and in JPG or PNG format. Videos in vertical format should have a minimum of 1080 x 1350 resolution. Videos in horizontal format should have a minimum of 1920 x 1080 resolution. 
  • Photos and videos must not have been previously published or submitted to other contests. 
  • Photos and videos should not contain any offensive or inappropriate content. No drugs, alcohol, inappropriate/illegal activities, profanity, etc. Use good judgement!

Videos

  • Participants must submit their videos via email to dgecomms@uoregon.edu
  • The email subject line should include “GEO summer 2024 video contest submission” and the participant's name. 
  • In the body of the email, participants should include their name, email address, study abroad location, and a brief description of the video. Optional: participants may also include their Instagram handle to be featured on @GEOAbroad

Deadline

GEO will be accepting entries until Monday, September 16, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.

Judging Criteria and Prizes

GEO will judge the photos based on the following criteria

  • Relevance to the theme of the category
  • Creativity and originality
  • Technical quality of the photo (in focus, good lighting, etc.)

GEO will choose one winner per category. Each winner will receive a $25 Duck Bucks card.
