This course will help you develop basic skills enabling you to better process your intercultural experience in Oviedo. This will be accomplished by first making students aware of the cultural baggage they have brought with them and the implicit assumptions that they use in understanding Spanish life and culture as it is lived around you each day. You will be compelled to make observations on various aspects of life in Oviedo, interpreting them from the perspective of your own culture and then challenging your interpretation by asking yourself what meaning they may have to the people of Oviedo. By actively participating in class, through guided cultural observations and the careful writing of short reflection papers, you will develop a capacity to withhold judgment until you have had a chance to consider the multiple meanings of what you see and experience around you, not just in Oviedo, but wherever you may go.
