Sustainable Development in Latin America

Ecuador provides an ideal setting for exploring issues related to sustainable development. This course will examine the tensions, challenges, and possibilities for reconciling development and conservation in the tropical dry forest zone, a critically important and globally imperiled ecosystem. Course activities center around the city of Bahía de Caráquez, which has attempted to rethink its development trajectory after a series of environmental disasters in 1998 and 2016 that exposed the human toll of unsustainable development practices.

From Handel to Hendrix: A Musical Exploration in London

London’s vibrant cultural life and history provide the setting for an immersivethree-week course exploring music performed throughout this world capitol. From the serenity of Evensong to the raucousness of a West End musical, students will engage with a wide variety of musical genres throughout the course. Students will learn to listen critically and analytically to music originating from a wide variety of historical eras and born from diverse circumstances. An interdisciplinary approach will encourage students to consider music in relation to the art and culture surrounding its creation.

Journalistic Interview across Language and Culture - SOJC J483

Students study interview techniques in the classroom and engage in field work with news-making interviewees. Guests with specific types of interviewing experiences may join the class during the term. Guest lecturers who use the interview in their work periodically may speak to the class. Three interviews are assigned, as is a fourth feature story final project.

Community Psychology

This course introduces you to some of the basic principles of community psychology, community research, types and models of prevention, psychological sense of community, and strategies for community intervention and social change.  Topical issues such as education, sanitation, and health will be discussed.  The basic goal is simply to apply the principles of psychology so that we can understand community life more fully and try to make it better. 

Introduction to Epidemiology – West Africa

Introduction to Epidemiology – West Africa, starts with a definition of epidemiology, introduces the history of modern epidemiology, and provides examples of the uses and applications of epidemiology. Measurement of morbidity and mortality, and a summary of the different types of study designs and their strengths and limitations. An introduction to statistical methods sets the scene for understanding basic concepts and available tools for analyzing data and evaluating the impact of interventions. A fundamental task of epidemiologists is to understand the process of making causal judgements.
