Stockholm, a major city founded more than 700 years ago, combines old-world charm with the vibrant life of a modern European capital. Choose a core course from 11 academic programs and select from over 50 upper-level elective courses. All courses are taught in English. Areas of study include Gender and Sexuality, Economics, International Studies, Literature, Biomedicine, Neuroscience, Psychology, Public Health, Political Science, and Swedish Language and Culture. Courses are taught by Swedish and European faculty who are also practitioners in their fields, and courses include excursions and field trips in order to allow students to see the industry at work. These intellectually stimulating courses challenge students to examine issues from various perspectives as they debate, research, analyze, and reflect on contemporary topics and relevant issues.
Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, was built on 14 islands, connected by 57 bridges, earning the Swedish capital the nickname "Beauty on the Water." IT is the cultural, media, political, and economic center of Sweden with over 1.6 million inhabitants. Its rich history dates back to the 13th Century. Instructions for Applying to the Program
Step 1: Dual Application Process
To apply, you must submit applications to both the DIS and GEO portals simultaneously.
- DIS Application:
- Complete the DIS application through the DIS Application Link. You will find their list of required application materials and instructions.
- Please be aware that one of the required materials which we will complete on your behalf is the university. In order for GEO to complete that approval, you must have completed an application through the GEO portal.
- GEO Portal Application:
- Complete your GEO application through the GEO Stockholm Start an Application Link
- Ensure all required documents are submitted.
- Your application status will change to “under review”
Step 2: Application Review
When your required DIS application materials are submitted, DIS will review your application.
Step 3: Admission and Deposit
- Nomination and Institutional Approval:
After your GEO application is reviewed, your GEO status changes to “Nominated” and Home Institutional Approval form(HIA) is submitted to DIS. Your DIS application is complete after the HIA is sent by your coordinator. It takes about two to three weeks to get an acceptance offer from DIS after the HIA is submitted. - Acceptance Offer:
If admitted, DIS will send an official acceptance email to you and your coordinator. This email confirms your eligibility to participate in the program. - Deadline to Confirm:
You will have two weeks from the date of your acceptance email to confirm your place in the program. - DIS Registration and $500 deposit (after your acceptance is confirmed):
Registration will open approximately six months before the start of your term. Once registration is available, DIS will provide detailed instructions for completing your acceptance, including payment of the US$500 non-refundable deposit. Please note that DIS can only review your registration after receiving this deposit.
Step 4: Confirmation Process
- Checklist Completion:
- Log in to your DIS Portal and follow their instructions to confirm your place in the program, including the required Student Agreement form.
- Your GEO status will change to “Acceptance confirmed” after completing required documents on both GEO and DIS portals.
Important Reminders
- Ensure that both the DIS and GEO applications are completed by the stated deadlines.
- Pay your $500 deposit to DIS within two weeks of receiving acceptance offer
- Get your application in early for the best possibility of getting into your first core course. Please be aware that a number of DIS courses may fill before the deadline. It is advantageous for you to apply early and complete your application.

Academic Details
Courses are taught in English and designed for upper level undergraduates. Some DIS programs also admit graduate students. At DIS, you build your own curriculum. You pick a core course from among the various programs on offer, and, following that, you freely select any electives from among the extensive list of liberal arts and natural science courses as long as you meet individual course prerequisites and there are no scheduling conflicts.
Unique among European study abroad programs, DIS places significant emphasis on study tours as a fully integrated component of the academic program. Programs offered include Gender and Sexuality, Economics, International Studies, Literature, Biomedicine, Neuroscience, Psychology, Public Health, Political Science, and Swedish Language and Culture. Summer
During the summer, DIS in Stockholm offers three session. Their Summer I session overlaps with spring term, so UO students are not able to participate in that session. They are able to participate in Summer II (3 weeks long) and Summer III (4 weeks long) sessions. There are 80+ summer courses offered every summer in a variety of fields at both their Copenhagen and Stockholm locations, and you can mix and match. Note: DIS offers courses on the semester system. This means that 1 DIS credit = 1.5 UO quarter credits. Most classes at DIS are worth 3 semester credits, but some are worth 4-6 semester credits. A 3 credit DIS credits would be worth 5 UO credits. You are not able to exceed 18 credits. Talk to your academic advisor before selecting which courses you plan to take at DIS. Most students take 3 DIS classes in a semester.

Housing Description
DIS guarantees housing to all students who request DIS-arranged housing. Students have several different options:
- Swedish host family - Live with a Swedish family and immerse yourself in Swedish family life.
- Studentboende - Live alongside local Swedish and fellow DIS students in a Studentboende, which are dorm-style residential buildings located throughout Stockholm.
- DIS Living & Learning Community - Co-curricular housing experience that integrates a shared interest through the lens of exploring Stockholm or Sweidsh culture within your housing experience.
- Residential Community - Live solely with other DIS students and enjoy your support network.
