LGBTQ+ Histories and Global Travel in Amsterdam

Program Overview

This short-term summer program invites students to explore the histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences of LGBTQ+ communities in Amsterdam—one of the most queer-friendly cities in the world. Through site visits to landmarks such as the Homomonument, Anne Frank House, Resistance Museum, and Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ archive, students will engage with themes of identity, migration, resilience, and social justice. The course combines pre-departure learning with immersive experiences abroad, offering students opportunities to reflect on the intersections of history, community, and global travel. Designed with accessibility and inclusion in mind, this program is especially welcoming to LGBTQ+ students and others who may be underrepresented in study abroad.

*The program is a three-week course with the first week taking place on-line through asynchronous readings and assignments from June 21-25, 2027.  The in-country course will run from June 28-July 9, with students arriving in Amsterdam on June 26-27.

This program is less than 90 days. Students with a US passport will be traveling to Italy under the Schengen Visa waiver program and do not require a travel visa for this program, and GEO is unable to assist U.S. citizens in obtaining a visa. If you are not a U.S. Citizen: Notify your GEO Advisor. Students who are not U.S. citizens should contact the Italian consulate in their country of residence about visa requirements, no matter the duration of the program of study.

This program has a rolling admission application process: GEO staff (and the program faculty leader, if applicable) will complete a review of the application materials of complete applications in the order that they are submitted (“first come, first serve”). Decisions about acceptance will be made shortly after you submit a complete application. There are some programs that fill fast, some even before the deadline. Students are encouraged to complete applications and commit to programs early.

Acceptance is based on a holistic review of your application. This includes a review of your GPA, transcripts (including courses taken and in-progress), any additional requirements or prerequisites (see section "Additional Requirements"), and the short statement.

Faculty-Led Scholarship Opportunity

Applicants to this program are eligible for program-specific scholarship funds. Award recipients are chosen based on academic merit, financial need, and overall quality of their essay. Individual awards range from $500-$1,500. To be considered, apply to the GEO General Scholarship by the advertised deadline for the term you will be abroad. Students who apply will automatically be considered for all available funding within the General Scholarship, including this program's scholarship funds.

Discount for Pell Recipients

To expand access to study abroad, GEO is offering a $500 discount for this program to UO students who currently have the Pell Grant as part of their federal financial aid (FAFSA).

Academic Details

All students will enroll in the following course:

  • LGBTQ+ Histories and Global Travel (6 credits)

Students will get credit for either a 300-level Women, Gender, and Sexuality course; 300-level Anthropology course or 300-level Global Studies course; pending departmental approval. 

*Students will complete one week of readings and assignments prior to arriving in Amsterdam through a week of asynchronous class June 21-25,2027. During your time in the Netherlands, classes will mostly be conducted in an experiential learning environment, with lectures and activities at different historical sites, museums, or other places of interest. You will also have some in-class time with your faculty members and guest speakers.

Non-UO students: Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.

Housing Description

Students will be housed in hostel rooms with up to 4 separate beds for the students. Each room has a private bathroom. Linens and towels included. Laundry facilities available for a small fee. All breakfasts will be provided.

Cancellation Policy

Student is responsible for 50% of total GEO program fees.
Program start date or after program begins

Student is responsible for 100% of total GEO program fees.
Note that scholarship funds are not able to be applied to program deposit.

IMPORTANT: The GEO Cancellation Policy is effective from the time a student agrees to pay their non-refundable program deposit or electronically signs the program commitment form, regardless of application or acceptance status. It is essential to read this policy before a potential cancellation takes place, to fully understand the withdrawal and cancellation penalties, and to understand what it means financially to commit to a study abroad program.

Students who cancel their participation must notify GEO in writing. Email is acceptable (geoinfo@uoregon.edu). Verbal notification to GEO or notification given to a non-UO campus study abroad office is not sufficient.
